The History of BMW®

BMW® began as an aircraft company manufacturing engines for the booming aviation industry. Their logo is still designed to include propellers against a blue sky. After the end of World War I, the aviation industry in Germany was shut down, so BMW® needed to develop a new business model. After a couple of forays into other motorized vehicle production, BMW® settled on creating a pedal bike with an industrial engine strapped to the back, the first kind of motorcycle. 

Motorcycle production was halted after World War II due to facility damage and Germany being forced to cease any military production for two years. Production would resume in 1947 and continue uninterrupted for the next few decades. Sales and production of the bikes were divided between East and West Germany. Their absence from the global motorcycle market meant that the company had to play catch-up in building interest from consumers who were already well-familiar with other brands. Their releases would eventually begin to capture attention from motorcycle enthusiasts around the world, and the concept of luxury, higher-quality motorcycles began to take shape and set BMW® up as a brand synonymous with the finer things in life.
