Triumph Cycle Co. produced its first motorcycle in Coventry, England in 1902. Before this, Triumph had made a name for itself by producing a popular line of bicycles, but they really took off once they placed a motor on their classic design. These first "motorbikes" featured small single-cylinder Belgian Minerva engines attached to the frame of the bike. They may not seem like much now, but at the time they were a revelation!By 1905 Triumph had begun producing their own engines and designing bikes that were suitable for the all-new competitive motorcycle racing scene. By 1910 they were producing motorcycles at a rate of over 1000 per year, and they had even developed engines powerful enough to match a 450cc bike!
Entering The U.S. Market
Triumph had already begun exporting motorcycles to the United States before they decided to make a real push into the market in 1950. The Triumph Corporation was formed to be the basis of the American sales operation, and they quickly took off with sales eclipsing those of the British parent company within a few short years.During World War II, many soldiers had experienced motorbikes on the battlefield and wanted to get back to that exhilarating level of riding in civilian life. This greatly increased the popularity of riding across the world and did wonders for the American motorcycle audience. In 1953, actor Marlon Brando rode a Triumph 650cc Thunderbird 6T in the movie The Wild One, which helped to cement Triumph motorcycles as a stylish, fast, and fun alternative to cars. Over the next several decades, Triumph continued to improve the speed and racing capabilities of these bikes, making them a favorite on the racecourse and on the streets!
